This popular tourist attraction is known as Japan's oldest clock tower. It rings every hour on the hour the number of times of the hour of day (156 times a day).
It was originally a martial arts dojo for the Sapporo agricultural school that preceded Hokkaido University. A nationally designated important cultural property.
